On Wednesday, August 23, 2017 members of the Urban Gentlemen’s Clubs of Pine Grove Elementary and Eastside Elementary met at Papa Joe’s for an elegant dinner. Parents dropped their children off to have dinner with the other members of the club.
The dinners were paid for by private donations. Both clubs receive contributions from the Kiwanis, an anonymous donor and many others.
Local dignitaries School Board Member Mark Johnson and Sheriff Al Nienhuis attended to show their support for the program.
Pine Grove Elementary Assistant principal Nick Pagano and Eastside Elementary Assistant principal Michael Lastra both head up the Urban Gentleman’s Club at their respective schools.
Around a year ago we reported on the Urban Gentlemen’s Club at Pine Grove Elementary. School Principal Nancy Johnson reported that “school-wide discipline issues have gone down significantly since the formation of the Urban Gentlemen’s Club.”
We had a chance to check back in with them to see if the promise of the program was holding up. We received information regarding the Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs) at Pine Grove. ODRs have been reduced since the Urban Gentlemen’s Club has been active. In the 2015-2016 school year there were 630 total students. School wide there were 108 students receiving 406 ODRs with 19 members of the Urban Gentlemen’s club receiving 94 ODRs. In 2016-2017 (the first full year of the Urban Gentlemen’s Club) there were 820 total students and school wide there were 82 students receiving 156 ODRs with 16 members of the Urban Gentlemen’s club receiving 29 ODRs. The Urban Gentlemen’s Club had 136 members in 2016-2017. The numbers show an improvement with less office referrals.
