On the Farm Update: Where to pick fresh

April 23, 2017 - 14:35

(STAFF)

Unfortunately some of the blueberry farms were affected by the freeze in mid March. The blueberry crop at Ergle’s Tree Farm in Dade City was wiped out and Butch’s Blueberries did not fare so well. They had some damage to their crop as well as equipment failure. Neither farm will be opening for u-pick this season.

However over at Upicktopia in Masaryktown, blueberries are plentiful. They also have a variety of other produce available including zucchini, yellow squash, sweet and red onions, kale, kohlrabi, carrots, beets, cabbage, hydroponic romaine lettuce, parsley, cilantro, a few broccoli, and herbs.
Margo’s Blueberry Farm just opened up for U-pick April 15th. They are open for picking Wednesday- Saturday 10AM - 5PM.

Frazier’s Farm still anticipates having corn ready for picking around Mother’s Day (early to mid May) despite the mid March cold snap.

“Corn made it through cold weather better than I did! Up 48 hours preparing for it! Everything looks good now,” posted David Frazier on March 19th.

They are currently busy sprucing up the farmstand.

Richard’s Farm just began harvesting moringa. They have $5 moringa trees available as well as squash, onions, and beans. They are expecting black-eyed peas to be available in two weeks. Everything offered at the farm is grown on location and it’s a "take what you need and leave what you can" operation.

Beasley Farms offers a $10 produce box along with organic veggies from regional farms at their farmstand locations. You can check their facebook/website for availability. They also grow select produce at their farm.

Blueberries at JG Ranch are on the wane, but sweet corn and watermelon will be available mid/end of May. Blackberries will start mid May. There are still green beans for picking.

Florida Best Blueberry Farm in Inverness is having their Opening Day for U-Pick Blueberries on Saturday, April 22. The U-Pick hours will be from 9:00 am-5:00 pm Wednesday thru Sunday each week (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) until the season ends. Tony Russ, along with his wife Cindy, and their two children, Anthony and Sawyer, invite the public to enjoy an outing with friends and relatives to see their working farm first hand, while picking their very own blueberries.
