On June 6th, Commissioner Steve Champion asked Scott Harper of Hernando County Solid Waste and Recycling about the possibility of resuming trash collection on Memorial Day and Labor Day. According to Commissioner Champion, phones have been “ringing off the hook” from resident calls with this question.
During the June 6th discussion, it was agreed that the suspension of trash collection on just Memorial Day and Labor Day has been problematic enough for the board to seek a remedy. Mr. Harper reported to the BOCC that the estimated financial impact of re-opening trash collection on Monday holidays is $5340.00, “miniscule ... obviously to go up or down with salaries, fuel and and lease prices”.
Commissioner John Mitten, who owns Chik-Fil-A, reported that Monday pickup will greatly help his business, as well as others that remain open on these holidays.
As an administrative action, a vote was not required, but passed unanimously nonetheless.
