Counteracting $2.5 million county general fund budget deficit

“I’m pleased to announce that right now we have a balanced budget.” Those opening words from Budget Manager Pamela Lee were followed by, “The libraries are in there.” Following last week’s meetings with the commissioners individually, Lee prepared her presentation.

The General Fund showed an initial deficit of $1.8 million. New employees (who were hired with an effective date of 04/01/17), what Lee called “re-classes” and funds toward other organizations (such as AmSkills) increased the deficit by approximately $700,000, with a total new deficit figure of $2.5 million.

Lynn Gruber - White and Commissioner Nick Nicholson appointed to 2018 canvassing board

During the July 11th meeting, Supervisor of Elections Shirley Anderson appeared before the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) in order to appoint a commissioner to the Hernando County Canvassing Board.

Commissioner Wayne Dukes stated that Commissioner Nick Nicholson had agreed to serve on the 2018 canvassing board. This is slightly unusual since according to statute, the primary appointment goes to the Chairman.

County offers $250,000 settlement to BRW, Inc. for Osowaw Bike Trail project

BRW Contracting Inc. filed a lawsuit against the county on May 26, 2016 for “CONTRACT AND INDEBTEDNESS” in relation to the Osowaw Blvd. Bike Trail/ Sidewalk Project. An agreement for the project was signed between the county and BRW Contracting Inc. on February 10, 2015.

The project was put out to bid in 2014 and BRW was chosen by the county as the “lowest responsive responsible bidder” in December 2014. BRW bid $571,797.18 for the project, beating out Goodwin Bros., Pave-Rite, DAB Constructors and AJAX Paving Industries of FL.

'Sea Gate Village' development aims for mixed use designation, city council approves first hearing



The Sea Gate Village subdivision was first platted and approved by Hernando County on July 24, 2007. The property is currently vacant and undeveloped, except for sidewalks and water service that was installed to serve the future residential and commercial development.
