On the headwaters of the Halls River and US 19 in Homosassa sits the Greenhouse Bistro and Market. They recently opened and specialize in healthy high-end dining.
This restaurant actually has a greenhouse in the back of the building where they grow some of the fresh herbs that they use. They use fresh local vegetables, sustainable seafood, and free range meat when available. They even have wild game specials.
They offer a number of gluten free items and seek to accommodate food allergies. They cook the food from scratch so they can substitute ingredients.
We ordered their Grilled Bistro Burger, sandwiches, a soup, and a salad. The burger was made with grass-fed beef and came with sautéed mushrooms, tomato chutney and lettuce on a pretzel bun.
We also ordered the flavorful Sausage and Kale Soup and the Chicken Waldorf Salad which came with free-range chicken breast, apples, walnuts, grapes, celery, and seasonal lettuce. We chose the greek dressing. The chicken was very tender and excellently spiced.
The Chicken Pesto Panini sandwich came with free-range chicken breast, fresh mozzarella cheese, caramelized onion, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, and pesto on an artisan cheese roll. The turkey club sandwich came with turkey, bacon, avocado, tomato, bean sprouts, house-made cranberry mayo on an artisan cheese roll.
The restaurant’s decor is both eclectic and chic while incorporating early railroad history of the area.
The Greenhouse Bistro is a healthy change of pace and located close to the Homosassa Springs State Park so the two make a great outing. If you are on the Halls River which runs into the Homosassa River you can tie up at the dock.
