Disaster Declaration Timeline

Irma Disaster Declaration map

On Sept. 13, 2017 Hernando County along with a number of other counties was declared a disaster area. The disaster declaration has to be made by the Governor of the state affected.

The disaster designation is important because it allows Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to become more involved in the recovery efforts. The resources that can be made available are designated for the removal of debris, funding assistance for emergency services, possibly housing assistance, and more. A disaster declaration is also a necessary step to filing loss claims with FEMA.

Thank you, Hernando

Nearly three years ago, when the Tampa Tribune shut down Hernando Today, I wrote a column for the final issue titled “One Last Mile.”
That headline was a reference to a line often repeated in interviews by then Springstead head boys basketball coach Pat Kelly back in 2009, as his team made a stunning run to the state championship game.
At the time, I wasn’t sure what the future held for me. Thanks to Rocco and Julie Maglio and Hernando Sun, it turned out I still had a few miles left in the tank.

The Little Lady Cafe is a red building between the Courthouse and Water Tower in downtown Brooksville. We reviewed the restaurant a year ago, but it has since changed hands. The restaurant is now run/owned by Rory Steele. She worked at the restaurant for nearly 18 months before she decided to purchase the business with the support of her partners Brent Gaustad and Pete Roberts.

4x in 5 years: Monster Transmission makes Inc. 5000 list

Making Inc. Magazine’s 5000 list is quite an accomplishment, but doing it for 4 times within 5 years is an even bigger one.

Businesses apply to be listed, but only the fastest growing companies in America make the cut. This is determined by a number of factors including gross sales over a three year time period (which cannot be under $1 million) and employee count. The figures submitted are certified by a CPA.

Cutting the cable cord

The price of cable has increased significantly over the years. Many cable bills are north of $200 a month, but that also includes phone and Internet. This means that customers can save around a $100 a month by cutting the cord.

Depending on your viewing habits, dropping cable may or may not be a major sacrifice. If you watch movies and older TV shows you may be able to replace cable with Netflix or Amazon Prime. These services usually cost around $10 a month depending on the options chosen.
