The Hernando County School District held their regular board meeting on 01/10/17. Superintendent Lori Romano announced an increase in graduation rates in 2016 to 81.1%. Next she congratulated Pam Cannon from Explorer K8 as the 2017 School Related Employee of the Year. Pam is the school’s secretary but enthusiastically does so much more, always with a smile.
Administrators, teachers and students at Moton Elementary from grades 4-6 enjoyed a great presentation from motivational speaker Dell O’Barnes Sr. He told a story about how he overcame adversity and reminded the students that nothing is impossible. He also played his saxophone for them and encouraged them.

Parent Academy presents their next workshop “Ready for the Journey: Nourishing Healthy Minds and Healthy Kids.” It will be held at Explorer K8 on January 28th.
The update was closed by remembering former educator, school board member, and community volunteer Cynthia Moore who recently passed away. She was very active in the Brooksville community and influenced many people’s lives. She will be greatly missed.
Update from Student Representative Allison Selg
The Hernando County School District held their regular board meeting on 01/10/17. Allison Selg, Student Representative from Nature Coast Technical High School provided us with updates from each school in Hernando County. Chocachatti Elementary School students enjoyed their holiday break with their families and baking cookies and are looking forward to the rest of the school year. Suncoast Elementary School’s Music and Movement Club performed for the whole school before holiday break and Generations Christian Church provided Christmas gifts to 10 families this year. Westside Elementary School will be reading a variety of stories from different countries around the world. On Thursday, January 26th the hallways of the school will be decorated to represent the countries studied and families are invited to come visit each country. Winding Waters K-8 is having their annual spirit week.
Hernando High is sending one student to the All-State Band Convention this weekend. Next week, their Allied Health Program begins a clinical rotation to work towards their CMAA and CNA licenses at hospital and nursing home settings. Nature Coast Technical High School had their senior night on 01/05/17 and school blankets are now on sale. Auditions for “The Addams Family” were held on 01/10/17 and 1/11/17. Springstead High School will be attending the Beta Club state convention 1/13/17-1/14/17. Tennis Season will be starting soon, track season is underway, and Theatre will be putting on a showcase in February. IB students are currently wrapping up their extended essays and various subject essays. The gifted mentoring program between Challenger and Springstead continues, and Prom invites have been sent out to Juniors and Seniors. The theme is MasqueRave. Weeki Wachee High School’s Girls Varsity Soccer Districts are taking place on 01/17/17. They have set their highest record for wins in the history of WWHS Soccer. The Senior class will be taking their panoramic photo on 01/17/17, Boys Varsity Soccer Districts will take place on 01/23/17 and The Yearbook Club is having a very productive year so far.
