With no district tournament, Spring Hill Dixie Baseball sent two entrants into the “O”Zone (age 11-12) All-Stars State Tournament at the MERE Complex in Marianna.
In the double-elimination event, which began July 15, Spring Hill American had the longest run, going 2-2.
On the opening day of action, SH American started off with a 4-3 win over Sneads. On July 16, a rain-soaked Sunday, SH American ended up playing late in the evening, falling to Sebring, 9-8.
The next day, SH American survived its first elimination game by dusting Liberty County, 9-2. But a 12-2 loss to Sebring ended the local crew’s run on July 18. SH American head coach David Jones did not return several messages seeking comment on the team’s performance in the tournament.
Spring Hill National had a shorter stay at states, though that was not entirely unexpected for the less experienced of the two Spring Hill squads.
Franklin County defeated SH National on opening day, 8-2, then Marianna eliminated SH National the next day, 13-3. Brendan Anderson reached bases four times in both games, while Ian Finnan had the team’s lone hit in the first contest.
“For a young team, my kids played very well,” SH National head coach Larry Marsh said. “That’s what it’s all about. I was very proud of them. There were some really, really good teams there.
“My kids had a blast. A couple of them were crying at the end because they were so excited. They were eager to win. We just feel short.”
