Moon Over Croom Trail Run

Photography by Alice Mary Herden

There is a part of Withlacoochee Forest that is tucked away off of Croom Road in Brooksville, Florida called Tucker Hill. This area has the most amazing natural settings of growing oaks. The secluded area, away from major roadways, makes it a perfect place to have a night trail run.

Andy Mathews and Jim Hartnett are the coordinators for Tampa Races and this is their second year coordinating the Moon over Croom trail run event. With over two hundred and fifty runners signing up for this event, each year this event attracts more runners from all over the state of Florida.

Anthony Teetsell had stepped away from competing in powerlifting the past two years, instead focusing on coaching and his leadership roles. But last weekend, he made a critical decision. He wanted one more shot at the Special Olympics. So he’ll take part in the State Fall Classic in November at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. “I decided just one last time would be good for me,” Teetsell said. Teetsell, a 28-year-old Weeki Wachee resident, is one of many athletes dealing with an intellectual disability through Special Olympics Florida-Hernando County.

On Monday August 2nd, Spring Hill National will embark on the Dixie Baseball AA Rookies (age 7-8) All-Stars Machine Pitch World Series in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Leaders Abound for Spring Hill Juniors

When a team hits .536 combined, it can become difficult to pick out just one superstar. Spring Hill posted that batting average in last week’s Dixie Baseball Junior Boys (age 13) All-Stars State Tournament at the M.E.R.E. Complex in Marianna. The Hernando County crew went 4-0, outscoring its opponents by a combined 58-7. For eight players and head coach Joe Abbadessa, it was a repeat from winning the state crown at the “O”Zone (age 11-12) level last year.

When Harry Johnson joined the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department in the early 2000s, he wanted to make use of the two public softball fields in Spring Hill. Now, some 14-15 years later, HCRD has a recreational men's softball league that hovers in the neighborhood of 30 teams and around 500 players.

WESLEY CHAPEL - There's an old baseball adage that championship teams are strong up the middle. In the case of Spring Hill American's run to the title in the Dixie Baseball "O"Zone (age 11-12) All-Stars District 6 Tournament last week at Wesley Chapel District Park, that proved true. As their team defeated friendly foe Spring Hill National in Thursday's final, 17-3, second baseman Chase Davis and shortstop Zeth Rodriguez were a combined 5-for-5 with three walks, three home runs, six runs scored and eight runs batted in.
