SWFWMD Headquarters Not Moving to Tampa Yet, but Resources Are

On July 17th, Robert Beltran sent another memo to SWFWMD employees explaining that the Headquarters of SWFWMD will not be moved to Tampa due to the ample feedback they received from cities, counties and organizations against the move. Beltran wrote, “After completion of our budget process and further discussions with our Business Plan consultant, local officials and community leaders, staff concurs with the Governing Board’s action to approve the Business Plan except for the designation of the District headquarters.”

Mapping the Withlacoochee River Watershed

Imagine tromping through 40 miles of the densest portion of the Withlacoochee River, the roughly one mile wide slow moving Green Swamp. Dr. Mark Fulkerson, Senior Professional Engineer with the Water Management District did so with a small team, in order to map out the bottom and acquire elevations of the river bed. According to Dr. Fulkerson, it took a couple summers to finally get to the Hernando County line, where a surveying company took over. Being so dense, “The survey company would not touch the Green Swamp,” said Dr. Fulkerson at a recent lecture.

The City of Weeki Wachee’s Massive Growth

The City of Weeki Wachee has approved an 86-unit apartment complex. This will result in massive growth for the City, which currently has a population of 3 residents. The current mayor, Robyn Anderson, was the lone vote against the project.

It will be interesting to see if the 86 new residents choose to keep her as mayor or if she will be replaced by the new residents. Also of interest to the new residents will be the debt that the town is carrying. This debt has been a reason why the tiny town has not been swallowed by the county.
