Just 46 seconds separated Hernando Christian Academy’s six-man football team from a perfect season and a state championship Saturday night.
But the Lions ultimately returned home feeling the sting of disappointment, as Lakeland-Geneva Classical Academy scored late to pull out a 39-36 victory at Southeastern University’s Victory Field.
“I felt like our kids played as hard as they could. The breaks just went one way,” HCA head coach David Raley said. “Every aspect of our game played well. It was just two equally matched teams. They scored and time ran out.”

As the Nature Coast boys basketball team celebrated with its district championship trophy Friday night, the school’s girls weightlifting coach, Sharon Elliott, was among the faculty members filing out of the stands. Noticeably hanging from her neck was a silver medal, a reminder of what her own squad had accomplished just a few hours earlier. Yes, it was a good day to be a Shark.

BROOKSVILLE – Hosting a regional quarterfinal for the first time against an opponent having made a lengthy trip, Hernando Christian Academy head coach Mike Drummond figured his team needed a fast start. Fortunately for the Lady Lions in Thursday’s Class 2A, Region I girls basketball quarterfinal, Cayla Phillips was up to the task. The junior guard sank a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight of her game-high 16 points, as HCA built a 16-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 46-29 victory over Jacksonville-Eagle’s View.

BROOKSVILLE - There were moments on the sideline during Thursday's eight-man football spring game when Kasey Springer seemed his harshest critic.
The Hernando Christian Academy quarterback didn't play poorly despite his team's 21-7 loss to visiting Spring Hill Christian Academy. But he wasn't about to pat himself on the back, either.
