History of Events Commemorated by the Brooksville Raid

It was the summer of 1864. Sources state that four ships numbering 240 men from the 2nd Florida Cavalry (Union) and the 2nd U. S. Colored Infantry unloaded near Bayport. Many of the Union soldiers were familiar with the terrain, as twenty percent of the men from the 2nd Florida Cavalry were Hernando County natives.

Be a Land Baron at Chinsegut Hill

Sitting on the veranda of the Chinsegut Manor House, it is difficult remain in the 21st century, moreover subdue that inner land baron or baroness. For an instant you can imagine yourself as such a person, sipping a cool sweet iced tea and enjoying the brisk breeze that makes its way through the surrounding hills while overlooking your estate.

This vision is enhanced by the recently completed renovations made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the state. The home is also exquisitely decorated for the Christmas season.

BROOKSVILLE- At the Hernando County Fairgrounds, the Fourth Annual Candy Cane Acres began on November 27th and runs through December 17th. Alicia Stanina along with her sister and friends were debating which holiday event to take their kids to last weekend. “This is something simple for the kids,” Stanina said. With the kids gathered around Santa, smiles and laughter ensured them this was the best event for them to attend.

On Saturday night, Roger’s Park and Bayport Pier was filled to the max with anticipated residents of Hernando County awaiting to view some decked out Christmas boats for the 30th annual Weeki Wachee River Christmas Boat Parade.

Parking was quite a challenge as well as viewing the boats, which unfortunately left many discouraged. I would like to send out a huge “Thank You” to Scott and Kristy Stoker on Tropical Drive for opening their home to me so I was able to capture a couple of photos of this event.

Masaryktown 90th Anniversary Celebration, Lauren Dodson

Lauren Dodson, raised in Masaryktown was visiting her father, Larry Dodson, who is acting President of the Masaryktown Community Center back in February. She stumbled upon a foundation sign from a school house that has been long gone.

The sign stated "School founded in 1925." She also remembers a photo that showed around 100 Slovakians with the caption stating, “On December 5, 1925 these Slovaks arrived from New York City.”

36th Annual Thanksgiving Bluegrass Festival

The Roys at Sertoma Youth Ranch Thanksgiving Bluegrass Fest 2015

The Sertoma Youth Ranch is hosting their 36th Annual Thanksgiving Bluegrass Festival. It continues through today, November 28th.

The ranch is filled with campers and Bluegrass musicians as well as vendors selling their homemade crafts to fresh squeezed lemonade.
The festival originally started out country, until a promoter by the name of Steve Dittmas moved them into Bluegrass. They’ve kept those committed followers, however the game plan is to bring in the newer generation.

Bringing Joy to Families in Need this Holiday Season

Some Hernando County families in need will be receiving Christmas dinners and toys this year, thanks to the joint efforts of local residents with big hearts. Athena Sanchez and Jessica Cecil of AJLV Events will be hosting a Holiday Shopping Event with Mom & Pop Polarbear Helping Families on Sunday November 29th from 10 am to 4 pm at 10181 N. Broad St in Brooksville. The location will be donated by Christina and Alan Jernigan, owners of Jernigan Towing.

When you examine the breeds that are currently in the Hernando County animal shelter, many are pitbulls. According to Emily Weiss, Vice President of Research and Development for the ASPCA, the American Pit Bull is number 1 on the list of the top ten most common breeds in shelters throughout the US:

On Saturday evening at the Hernando Performing Arts Center, the sophistication and talent of Barbara Streisand graced the stage. It was the season opener for the Hernando Performing Arts Center Guild.

Carla DelVillaggio, Barbara Streisand tribute artist, performed a wide range of Streisand songs with impeccable accuracy. She trained as a lyric soprano and has performed for dignitaries around the world.
