Hernando County had just one entrant into this year’s Dixie T-Ball (age 5-6) All-Stars District 6 Tournament, taking place in Wildwood starting last Saturday and going on this past week.
The Hernando Youth League Brooksville branch sent a squad that finished 1-2, an improvement from recent seasons when Brooksville has typically gone winless in the double-elimination event.
On Saturday, the tournament got underway and the local crew suffered a 38-8 loss to South Sumter. The next day, though, was a much different story.
Taking on San Antonio, Brooksville rallied for a thrilling 39-38 walk-off victory in seven innings. T-Ball games typically only go six innings.
Kendall Tilto recorded a key out in the top of the sixth inning, allowing Brooksville to stay within striking distance heading into the bottom half. She then scored the tying run from second base on a hit by Paxton David, which sent the contest into extra innings.
Drew Arflack played the hero in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the winning run on an inside-the-park home run to end it.
Following two days of rain, Brooksville faced Wildwood on Wednesday and fell, 28-6. That capped the all-star run that was nonetheless viewed as a success given the circumstances.
“I think we did OK for a non-travel ball team. South Sumter and Wildwood do a lot of travel ball,” Brooksville T-Ball head coach Seth Noe said. “Putting kids who don’t play year-round up against those two teams, we didn’t do so well. They did their best, got a lot of experience out of it. In my eyes, we did pretty well.”
