Students and staff members who knew Maria Rybka are working to make her proud and keep her memory alive.
“Maria Rybka was the embodiment of love and care for so many students in Hernando County for many years. She was a teacher and administrator in Hernando for years before she passed away quickly from cancer this past fall,” explains Tori Selby, Springstead Beta Club Sponsor and Social Studies teacher.
A walk-a-thon on May 19, 2018 will raise funds for the Maria Rybka Memorial Scholarship. The Beta Club, a community service club run by high school students, is hoping to award the scholarship to a High School Senior that reflects Maria’s best qualities: selflessness towards others, dedication to improve the lives around her and an infectious happiness for life.
Additionally Selby remarked, “30% of monies raised will also be donated to the American Cancer Society through our local Relay for Life.”
“This event is being put on by my students, myself and some of Maria’s friends. Her daughter Kailey Rybka and her niece Chelsey Jones are spearheading the event as well. My students and Beta Club president Aly Burzumato are working diligently on this project and are organizing not just the walk-a-thon, but also food trucks and sponsors to raffle off baskets that have been donated by local businesses,” Selby said.
Selby expects 300 to 400 people for the event.
“I could not be more proud of my students and their effort to bring a grieving community together to celebrate Maria’s life,” remarked Selby.
