Every Florida resident has the ability to impact the conservation of gopher tortoises. Join regional gopher tortoise biologist Kelly O’Connor for a detailed look at the life history of gopher tortoises and information on how you can help protect this unique species.
The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species.
They are threatened by predation and habitat destruction. The gopher tortoise is a representative of the genus Gopherus, which contains the only tortoises native to North America. Gopher tortoises are a federally protected species. Current Florida state regulations clearly indicate that it is illegal to handle or disturb gopher tortoises or to bother their burrows.
