It was another stellar season of prep baseball throughout Hernando County, as no team finished with less than 11 wins. From the start of the season back in February all the way to the Class 5A state semifinals, there were plenty of individual performances that could be recognized along the way. We compiled a list of the top baseball players from this past season with the Hernando Sun’s All-Hernando Baseball Team.
P – Jonathan Gates, Senior, Nature Coast Technical: He was instrumental in the Sharks’ run to the Class 5A state semifinals. Gates had a 1.05 ERA, 9-2 record and struck out 135 of the batters he faced. At the plate, Gates had a .430 batting average with 40 hits, 10 home runs and 48 RBIs.
P – Jack Jasiak, Junior, Springstead: He went 7-3 with a 1.60 ERA, with 86 strikeouts and 13 earned runs through 12 appearances. Jasiak pitched four complete games and only walked 12 batters of the 244 he faced.
C – Brandon Riera, Senior, Nature Coast Technical: He committed only two errors while hitting .312 with 18 runs and two homers.
INF – Connor Morgan, Sophomore, Hernando: The sensational sophomore batted .489, drove in 34 runs and belted four home runs.
INF – Jordan McMath, Sophomore, Nature Coast Technical: McMath provided solid fielding for the Sharks, only committing one error all season. McMath was also a solid pitcher for the Sharks, going 8-2 with an earned run average of 3.05.
INF – Collin Greer, Sophomore, Weeki Wachee: He hit .333 and had 22 hits while playing solid in the infield for the Hornets.
INF – Anthony Urso, Senior, Hernando: Combined with Morgan to give the Leopards a strong infield. He also had a .398 batting average on the season.
OF – Tyler Adler, Senior, Central: He scored 21 runs, 35 hits and 19 RBIs to go along with a .385 batting average.
OF – Dalton Black, Junior, Hernando: Black was a big part of Hernando’s small ball lineups and 16 bases on just 17 attempts.
OF – Zach Funkhouser, Senior, Nature Coast Technical: The right fielder had one of the best batting averages for outfielders in the county at .453 and scored 49 runs. He also had 39 hits on the season.
UTL – Kevin Tomas, Senior, Springstead: Tomas batted .322 with 15 RBIs. On the mound, he also had a 1.86 ERA with a 7-4 record and 61 strikeouts.
