Week 2 of the regular season for prep football in the state of Florida began last week and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you- the Hernando County reader- all the insight you can get during the 2018 campaign. We will be doing a weekly top 5 ranking of the 5 teams within Hernando County. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 5 Prep Football Ranking heading into Week 3 of the regular season.

No. 1 Hernando (2-0, 0-0): A narrow 30-29 victory over Dakota Ridge of Littleton, Colorado now becomes Hernando’s most signature win of the season under the watch of first-year head coach Rob Kazmier. The Leopards continue non-district play this week when they host Land O’ Lakes at Tom Fisher Stadium. Hernando has a chance to push to 3-0 heading into district play.

No. 2 Springstead (2-0, 0-0): Two wins and two shutouts for Springstead, as the Eagles shutdown a much improved Weeki Wachee team 17-0. Mike Garofano’s group has shown the ability to score lots of points and win in a tight contest. This week Springstead will take on Nature Coast Technical in what is the biggest matchup in Hernando County to date this season.

No. 3 Nature Coast (1-1, 0-0): Why throw the ball when you got Michael Weston? The bulldozing running back has rushed for over 600 yards in just two games and continues to be one of the top tailbacks in Hernando County. This week provides a different test for the Sharks, as they take on undefeated Springstead. The Eagles will undoubtedly be a tough matchup for the Sharks, but provides plenty of intrigue.

No. 4 Weeki Wachee (0-2, 0-0): Yes, Weeki Wachee is 0-2 but don’t let the record fool you. This Hornets team is very much improved in all phases. Losses to Lake Weir and Springstead are nothing to look over, with both teams a combined 4-0. Weeki Wachee should have ample opportunities to pickup wins the next three weeks with games against Hudson Fivay, Central and Inverness Citrus.

No. 5 Central (0-1, 0-0): John Warren’s boy’s played tough in a 21-12 loss to Tavares last week, and are showing signs of improvement since Week 1’s blowout to Springstead. The Bears host Gainesville Eastside this week and look to pickup win No. 1 on the season.
