Paychecks for Patriots Job Fair in Spring Hill
Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC), CareerSource Pasco Hernando, the Hernando Chamber of Commerce, and Hernando County Office of Economic Development are seeking employers to participate in the Open for All – Paychecks for Patriots Job and Internship Fair scheduled on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will be held at the PHSC Spring Hill Campus, 450 Beverly Court. Doors open at 9 a.m. for veterans and 9:30 a.m. for the public.
Local employers interested in promoting open positions and future opportunities with emphasis on manufacturing and health care jobs will meet and greet veterans, PHSC students and student veterans, and other community members seeking employment. Monthly Drop-in. In September, we are planning to have a Chair Yoga class. This is a regular drop-in that takes place on the last Friday of each month.
There are no fees the Support Group, but when we have a craft at the Drop-in, clients pay a $3 fee for supplies. Oak Hill Hospital Hosts Monthly Congestive Heart Failure Series
Oak Hill Hospital hosts a Congestive Heart Failure education series for those living with congestive heart failure (CHF). The meeting is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month (except holidays) on the Oak Hill Hospital campus in Administrative Conference Room 1 on the first floor of the South Tower. The next session will be held on Tuesday, September 25. The series is held from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm and is hosted by Oak Hill Hospital’s Care Assure Patient Nurse Navigators Rebecca Voda, BSN, RN, CHFN (Certified Heart Failure Nurse) and Lisa Cierpka, BSN, RN, CCM (Certified Case Manager), CV-SHD (Cardiovascular Structural Heart Disease.
The monthly education series helps those who attend to gain a sense of empowerment and control through the education provided by these clinicians. Participants will reduce stress and anxiety by learning more about this chronic disease and they will be able to collaborate with others who have the same chronic condition. Above all they will also learn about resources that are available to them.

Hernando Audubon Society Meeting
At the Hernando Audubon meeting on Thursday, October 25, Ken Meyer will discuss “Living and Flying in the (mostly) Lower Troposphere: Let’s Talk About the Weather.” He will focus on migrating birds such as the Swallow-tailed Kite, which spends the summer in Florida and the winter in South America. He is Executive Director of Avian Research and Conservation Institute. The meeting will begin at 7 PM at the Community Activity Center, 205 E. Ft. Dade Ave. in Brooksville.

Psychology Day at Spring Hill campus
Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) will host a Psychology Day on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in Spring Hill, 450 Beverly Court from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the conference center, B105 and the campus courtyard.
Psychology Day event is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the community. Attendees will hear students’ presentations about various areas of psychological practice, meet psychologists from the Spring Hill area and learn about various jobs available in the field for those who graduate with a degree in psychology.

Local mental health counselor completes maternal mental health training
Local Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Dawn Wever, recently completed an eight-week “Maternal Mental Health” certificate training through Postpartum Support International (PSI), an organization dedicated to helping women suffering from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The training addressed perinatal screening, assessment & treatment options; evidence based psychotherapy; cultural competency; psychological gestation of pregnancy and postpartum psychosis and forensics; psychopharmacology and perinatal mental health; and resources for families, professionals and communities.
Perinatal mood & anxiety disorders refer to a group of disorders that includes depression, anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder, that occur during pregnancy or the postpartum period. These disorders occur more often than most people realize. In fact, according to PSI, perinatal depression is the most common complication of childbirth.
A woman with post-partum depression and/or anxiety might experience feelings of anger, sadness, irritability, guilt, lack of interest in the baby, changes in eating and sleeping habits, extreme worry, panic attacks, trouble concentrating, thoughts of hopelessness, and sometimes even thoughts of harming the baby or herself.
Approximately 10% of women experience depression in pregnancy and 15% experience significant depression following childbirth. Approximately 6% of pregnant women and 10% of postpartum women develop anxiety. Sometimes they experience both. Although women of every culture, age, income level and race can develop these mood disorders, percentages are higher for women who are also dealing with poverty and can be twice as high for teen parents. Hernando County has a higher percentage of families with children under 5 years living under 100% of poverty than the State (22.9% vs 18.3%, respectively).
