During the second weekend of February at the West Hernando Little League Complex, a 2019 umpire clinic was held in Spring Hill, FL. This clinic was designed for both new and returning umpires to get up to date on new rules implemented for the 2019 spring season. It also served to define umpiring mechanics and techniques.
Curt Christie with West Hernando Little League, has been volunteering for five years as an umpire. As changes in the rule book occur from season to season, making the right call is essential for both the umpire and the play.
“Every year there are slight changes in the league rules,” Christie said. “We are going to cover the rule book from A to Z.”
The clinic was broken up into three groups covering all aspects of umpiring mechanics from behind the plate and on the field.
The umpires in the league are volunteers and what keeps them doing what they do is ‘Passion.’
“That is what keeps them involved,” said Ray Schnyderite, President of State Umpire Association. “They come back to help build the program for the kids.”
West Hernando Little League spring season is now in action and umpires are ready to make this the best experience for these kids.
