Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Cracks Down on Unlicensed Contractors

Recently, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office had received several citizen complaints regarding incomplete and substandard home repairs.

It was discovered through investigation, that the repairs done on these homes were performed by unlicensed contractors. These inadequate repairs ranged from improper electrical wiring to roofs being removed and not replaced, subjecting the occupants to a myriad of safety issues, and the financial impact of repeating the planned work.

To combat these, and future violations, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit, with assistance from the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, and the Hernando County Building Division, prepared a plan to identify and arrest these offenders.

In an effort to protect our community, on March 5th and March 7 th, the Economic Crimes Unit conducted an operational plan targeting unlicensed contractors.

Over the course of two days, 11 unlicensed contractors responded to a home within the county and agreed to perform work on the residence without the proper licensure. At the conclusion of the plan, warrants were issued for the arrest of all 11 unlicensed contractors.

Legal, licensed contractors are required to possess specific licenses, demonstrating the proficiency and safety required by best practice guidelines. Unlicensed contractors are not bound by the same conditions and can jeopardize the safety of your family, the integrity of your home, and are often uninsured. Remember, hiring a professional, licensed contractor is an investment in one of your largest investments, your home.
