Hunters Lake, not for hunters!

At the January 15, 2019 Board of County Commissioners meeting, several residents of Hunter’s Lake addressed the board to resolve a situation where hunters were entering canals off Hunter’s Lake, and shooting toward private properties and homes while hunting ducks.  After several residents reported inaction from law enforcement and the board found it had no jurisdiction over the problem, the board voted 5-0 in consensus to write a letter to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which does have jurisdiction over hunting infractions.

On March 26, 2019,  Deputy County Attorney Jon Jouben presented to the board the proposed resolution requesting the FWC to designate the canals of Hunter’s Lake as bird sanctuaries, thereby prohibiting hunting.

The board approved the resolution unanimously.  The Hernando Sun will continue to follow developments.

The county provides the following information in regard to Hunters Lake:
“Hunters Lake is a naturally-occurring water body located in the extreme southwest corner of the subdivisions that are collectively known as “Spring Hill.”  Spring Hill’s developer, the Deltona Corporation, dredged twenty-four (24) canals that emanate from Hunters Lake.  As identified on the plats of Spring Hill, those canals are named Town Waterway, Tyler Waterway, Kelvin Waterway, Barlow Waterway, Cranbrook Waterway, Harcross Waterway, Saxon Waterway, Cranbrook Waterway, Sunbird Waterway, Greendale Waterway, Swallow Waterway, Telford Waterway, Caribbean Lake, Dandelion Lake, Baffin Waterway, Darnell Waterway, Planter Lake, Hampshire Waterway, Husk Waterway, Cactus Waterway, Paris Waterway, Eastpoint Waterway, Clearwater Waterway, and Eastbrook Waterway.”
