APRIL 2, 2019- Past the midway point of the regular season for prep girls softball in the state of Florida have district tournaments just a couple weeks away and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 2019 campaign. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 5 Prep Softball Poll heading into the stretch run this season.
No. 1 Hernando (16-1, 8-0): There’s been little to no doubt that Hernando is in a class of its own when it comes to this softball season. The Leopards are currently sporting a county-best 16-1 win-loss record and their lone loss came against Tampa Sickles in the championship game of the Leopard Slam tournament. Now in the stretch run, Hernando looks to solidify themselves as the No. 1 seed in Class 5A, District 7.
No. 2 Springstead (12-4, 4-3): Three losses within Class 6A, District 6 has the Eagles playing behind in the race to claim the No. 1 seed. The Eagles are currently behind Dunnellon and Crystal River and if the season ended today, would end up as the No. 3 seed. Springstead has been playing well all season long and if they can win 6A-6, watch out for the Eagles in the postseason.
No. 3 Nature Coast (10-7, 6-2): Just four games ago, Nature Coast was sitting in a precarious position. The Sharks were below the .500 mark at 6-7 and looking for some kind of spark to help the season get back on track. Nature Coast was able to get that by winning four in a row here as of late, with the Sharks beating York, Cypress Creek and Hudson Fivay twice to notch its longest such streak this season.
No. 4 Weeki Wachee (2-11, 0-6): A 2-game winning streak has snapped the Hornets’ 11-game skid in which the team lost 11 in a row. The Hornets picked up a huge 23-6 victory over Hudson Fivay and were able to nab a second consecutive win in a 13-11 extra innings game versus Central. Improvements are being made in the second half of the season by Weeki Wachee.
No. 5 Central (2-7, 2-5): With eight games left on the slate, the Bears had a much shorter schedule compared to its other Hernando County counterparts, as Central has only played in nine games so far. Central recently fell in an extra innings affair against Weeki Wachee, dropping them to the bottom of our latest poll.
