Spring football practices in the state of Florida are wrapping up.  County programs participated in spring contests on May 16 and here is a recap of the results.

Central 34, Dunedin 8: The battle between two teams that combined to go winless in 2018 went very well for the Bears. Central traveled over an hour to get down to Dunedin and was able to cruise by the Falcons 34-8 at Dunedin Memorial High School. The win for Central marks a good sign for a Central team that didn’t win a single game last year. Second-year head coach John Warren will be looking to lead the Bears into the off-season with some momentum after picking up a much-needed victory on the field. Central starts the 2019 season against Hudson Fivay at home.

Hernando 7, Groveland South Lake 0: The Leopards relied heavily upon their defense when they picked up a 7-0 victory against Groveland South Lake on the road in spring game action. Hernando’s junior varsity ended up losing 10-0 in the fourth quarter of play. Hernando was led by a tenacious defense that forced five turnovers on the night. Shavaris McNair, Jordan Williams, and Qwenton Coney all had interceptions for Hernando. Sam Sternberger and Austin McCombs recovered fumbles and Cordell Warthen accumulated three sacks. Running back Isaiah Brown scored on a 5-yard run for the game’s lone touchdown. Hernando will open up the 2019 preseason when they face Dunnellon.

Dunnellon 28, Springstead 22: Springstead has been facing Dunnellon in a lot of sports lately and the Eagles fell just short in their bid to upend the Tigers in football. After Springstead was able to defeat Dunnellon in baseball for the district crown, the Tigers returned the favor and defeated the Eagles 28-22 on the football field. The Eagles will now shift their focus to the summer and open up preseason play when they face Land O’ Lakes Sunlake.
