Unfortunately, Weeki Wachee and Nature Coast match was canceled and rescheduled for October 1.
Stepping in to replace Roger Maharaj, new Springstead golf coach Matthew McGarry has the opportunity to expand his game knowledge. McGarry has been Springstead’s basketball coach since 2015. Shifting from courtside to greenside, gives him a chance to expand his coaching career.
“Golf was something that I was interested in but something I wasn’t really ready to take on. It’s something I do for fun, so once the coaching position came open, and knowing the kids needed somebody to take over it was a no-brainer for me,” McGarry said.
Going on his seventh season, Central’s Tyson Ellis has noticed the fluctuation of student-athlete participation, especially in golf.
“It’s getting tougher and tougher to find golfers; we’ve got to scour the school,” Ellis said.
For the 2019 season, Central added three baseball players: Ryan Schmidt, Justin Gay, and Kyle Gates.
There is one athletic skill of golf can be applied to other sports. Ellis explained that the swings might be different, but the focus is on hand-eye coordination.
“The swings are different,” Ellis said. “Baseball players tend to swing off and rotate, and we can’t do that in golf.”
Changing some of the mechanics of the game, learning the fundamentals of mental focus, as well as disciplines, can be applied to any sport.
“I truly believe if I brought some basketball players, they would benefit from the fact that you have to be super patient out here. It’s nowhere near the product of basketball, but understanding it’s work every day. I would love to bring those kids out, the thing about basketball kids- at times they think they are too cool to do other things… whatever that means.”
Thursday Individual scores Andre El Yamani led the Springstead team with a score of 43, followed by Ben Keister scoring 52. Central Shane Smith scored 47 followed by Ryan Schmidt with a 53.
