It was a beautiful Monday morning for members of the West Hernando Athletic Club for Seniors conducting their 2019 season opener at Veterans Memorial Park in Spring Hill.
“Our events committee is very ambitious this year. We have something planned every month that is related to softball or totally outside of softball. We are hoping that getting the word out, we could increase our membership,” said Al Johnson, President of the West Hernando Athletic Club for Seniors.
Before the first pitch, the league started the season opener with inducting four of their members in the Hall of Fame; Bill Denegar, Tom Noga, Tom McCain, and Stephen King.
This season opener was also a tribute to those they have lost with a balloon release and a special tribute to the late Boomer Oliver.
“Some people touch our lives briefly while others leave a lasting impression and are never forgotten. Today we want to honor and dedicate this game, this season to a man whose made that kind of impression on all of us,” Johnny Anderson said.
The West Hernando Athletic Club for Seniors has been around for over twenty years. The league allows gentlemen 55 and older to stay active and be involved in the community.
If you haven’t heard about the league, feel free to attend a game. The association has four teams battling it out on the field. The first game starts at 9 am and the second game follows after that. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, there is action going on at Veterans Memorial Park in Spring Hill.
