New Port Richey– Mitchell, Springstead, Wiregrass, Land O’ Lakes, Tampa Catholic, and River Ridge girls basketball teams banded together over the Christmas holiday weekend for cancer awareness.
The lime green shirts are the focus rather than the wins and losses during this tournament. The shirts featured the names of players’ loved ones who have been affected by cancer.
“I have done tournaments before, and I did one a few years back for cancer, and this year I decided to go that route again,” said River Ridge girls basketball coach Joeyn Dearsman. “It pretty much focuses on getting together and playing basketball and playing for a good cause.”
Springstead’s head coach Zach Anspach said, “I personally like to have us get out of the area for tournaments, and this is a good tournament. There are good teams, we get good matchups.”
Dearsman stated the remainder of funds raised during the event would be donated to St. Judes.
