Springstead and Weeki Wachee High School have each added a new sport into their girls’ athletic program. Springstead inducted sand volleyball into their athletic offerings, and Weeki Wachee added girls’ flag football.
Weeki Wachee High School has put girls’ flag football within the athletic department for the Spring 2020 season.
“This is very exciting for us at Weeki Wachee,” Billy Hughes said. “I think it’s important for us to have this opportunity to be that platform for these talented female athletes.”
Their preseason game is at Lecanto High School on February 25th at 6:30 pm. The girls only have a four-game season, and it seems perfect to get this program started.

Springstead’s varsity volleyball coach Andrea Gracey, being a former player and coach herself,
suggested the idea to Springstead’s Athletic Director Dustin Kupcik back in 2019 to offer a girls beach volleyball program.
“I knew it would help my (volleyball) program having the girls not only playing indoors but also beach. There are a lot of positives with conditioning,” Springstead’s varsity volleyball coach Andrea Gracey said. “I definitely wanted to make history to have the first public school (in Hernando County) to have beach volleyball.”
Jordan McIntyre, Springstead graduate, played at Webber during her college attendance. Jordan is taking the role of head coach for Springstead’s sand volleyball program.
“I am really excited to be the first head coach of a program like this because volleyball was a big part of my life,” Jordan McIntyre said.
Adding these new sports is an adjustment for both the Weeki Wachee and Springstead’s athletic directors, it’s a positive move for any young female athlete.
“We are trying to come up with different sports, different opportunities to provide our female student-athletes,” Dustin Kupcik said. “I feel it was a win, win, win all the way around for volleyball, female athletes, and our athletic program.”
