On 04-09-2020, an individual leasing a storage unit at Public Storage located at 4080 Mariner Boulevard in Spring Hill reported his storage unit was burglarized.
An unknown suspect had cut the lock to gain entry into the storage unit.
The victim reported all of the contents of his storage unit to include numerous collectibles were taken.
He estimated the value of items stolen at more than $50,000.
During a search of the area by detectives, a collectible “Spice Girls” doll was located on the ground near a neighboring storage unit. The victim indicated the doll was part of a collectible set that was stolen from his storage unit.
The tenant of the neighboring storage unit was identified as Kalen Lane Slaughter W/M DOB/09-03-1987.
Detectives learned that Slaughter used his personal gate access code several times on the night of the burglary. Management also confirmed that Slaughter had canceled his lease agreement on April 10, one day after the burglary.
Slaughter signed a new lease on April 10 with StoreSmart Self Storage located at 2465 Anderson Snow Road, Spring Hill.
On 05-13-2020, Slaughter was captured on surveillance video breaking into a commercial vehicle located at StoreSmart Self Storage where he removed a battery from the vehicle valued at $140.
On 05-14-2020, Slaughter was located at StoreSmart Self Storage where he was taken into custody. Deputies searching the suspect’s storage unit located several of the stolen items from the Public Storage burglary.
At the time of his arrest, Slaughter was also found in possession of 7.1 grams of crystal methamphetamine.
Slaughter was charged with Burglary of a Structure, Burglary of a Conveyance, and Possession of Methamphetamine.
His bond was set at $20,000 on the current charges. However, his bond was revoked on previous charges of Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer and two counts of No Valid Driver’s License.
