The regular season for prep boys and girls basketball in the state of Florida has already begun this week and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 2020-2021 campaign. We will be doing a weekly Top 6 ranking of the six teams within Hernando County. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 6 Prep Boys/Girls Basketball Poll.
BOYS
No. 1 Nature Coast (4-1): The Sharks ripped off four straight wins to start the season before dropping their first game of the campaign to Lecanto 60-45.
No. 2 Springstead (3-1): The Eagles were one point away from being at 4-0 as they lost a 68-67 heartbreaker to Fivay. This Springstead team will be a good one.
No. 3 Central (5-3): It’s been a nice start to the season for the Bears, but the next three games will be telling for Central. They face Land O’ Lakes, Springstead, and Lecanto.
No. 4 Hernando (1-5): It’s been a tough go of it for the Leopards, but they’ve been competitive in most games. The Leopards lone win is 56-46 over Weeki Wachee.
No. 5 Hernando Christian Academy (1-1): The Lions haven’t played many games to this point, with just two contests so far. HCA does have a looming game upcoming against Weeki Wachee.
No. 6 Weeki Wachee (2-7): Weeki Wachee has played the most games of any Hernando County team so far and they’ve already surpassed its win total from a year ago.
GIRLS
No. 1 Hernando Christian Academy (6-0): The Lions have cruised through six games defeating Cambridge Christian, Meadowbrook Academy, Universal Academy, Redeemer Christian, Springstead and First Academy. Springstead was the closest game, having come within 10 points of HCA (45-35). HCA has a real opportunity to run the table and go 16-0 this season.
No. 2 Hernando (6-3): After starting the season off with losses to Fivay and Crystal River, the Leopards have gone 6-1 since that 0-2 start.
No. 3 Springstead (6-5): The Eagles fall right behind Hernando and Hernando Christian Academy because those were two of Springstead’s most recent losses.
No. 4 Weeki Wachee (3-3): After going 18-9 last season, the Hornets are off to a much slower start to the 2020-2021 campaign. Weeki Wachee started off with wins over New Port Richey Gulf and Inverness Citrus before going 1-3 in the next four games.
No. 5 Nature Coast (4-5): The Sharks are off to a good start and much of that is due to the play of center Heaven Lee. Lee is averaging 21 points per game.
No. 6 Central (1-3): Central has done something this season they didn’t do all of last year and that’s win a game. The Bears defeated Lecanto 37-32.
