Bluegrass, an American International Sound

Bluegrass music is a type of music formed in the Appalachian mountains that date back to the 1800s from immigrants that came to America bringing instruments with them like the violin, mandolin, and banjo. Pioneers from England, Scotland, and Ireland influenced bluegrass with their ballads and dance tunes. The African slave trade influenced bluegrass with their banjo and traditional African-American blues and jazz. Bluegrass music is mostly all acoustic using banjos, fiddles, guitars, and bass. There are vocals and they are unique as they have different harmonies, in which one harmony is in a higher pitch from the other harmonies making it a unified harmony but with different tones.

It is American roots music that developed in the 40s and then took shape in the early 1950s. This was then unified by a man who is now called the Father of bluegrass named Bill Monroe. He, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs developed the style and now, it is a culture celebrated in bluegrass festivals.

Here in Brooksville, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy the annual Florida Bluegrass Classic which is a family-style event with many bluegrass musicians performing. People drive from around the state and even the country to take part and or to listen. This is an event that has much more than music, there are also classic cars, vendors, camping, and more for a great family-style festival.

The annual Florida Bluegrass Classic in Brooksville is produced by Evans Media Group, a family-owned and operated company based out of Florida for over 20 years. This year the festival will be held at Florida Classic Park in Brooksville from February 11th through the 13th.  It is a 3-Day event of more than 20 shows featuring classic country music, oldies, comedy, and hard-driving bluegrass music. Onsite, there are more than 500 campsites for music enthusiasts to perform together after the shows into the late hours.
