Family fun returns to Brooksville March 13, when YMCA of the Suncoast—Hernando County Branch kick starts Spring Break with a free Family Fun Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Brooksville Community Center,  601 E Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. And the guest of honor will be someone particularly known for his kick.

Ex-pro football player Darren Hambrick is a veteran of the Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers, and Cleveland Browns. And this Pasco-based linebacker will be on hand to meet fans at this festive outdoor event, which is open to the public. No pre-registration is required.

“Spend the afternoon with some friendly competition between kickball and cornhole, connect with your creative side with some arts and crafts, enjoy some live music and lunch,” reads an event notice. “Give us your feedback on some other program/activity ideas!”

This marks only the second time that the YMCA of the Suncoast-Hernando County has brought their Family Fun Day to Brooksville. “The Y has been offering family events for many years now but the majority of them have primarily been held at the branch.  As the YMCA of Hernando County, we are starting to really reach out and ensure that we are serving more of the community outside of the walls of our facility,” said Amber Slusser, Branch Executive Director of the YMCA of the Suncoast–Hernando County. “This will be our second Family Fun Day event that we are holding for the South Brooksville Community.”

Slusser said that Family Fun Day promises to offer a rich of activities for area families. “This family fun day will include a kickball game, cornhole, arts and crafts, games, live music with a DJ, resources from partners such as the Health Department, Hernando Community Anti-Drug Coalition and PHSC, a visit from the fire department, food and a visit with ex-pro football player Darren Hambrick,” she said.

And, in light of current global conditions, the event will be conducted with the issues of health and safety in mind. “While this is an outdoor event, we will encourage community members to wear face masks.  Activity stations and community partners will be distanced as to help promote social distancing between families that are going around,” Slusser explained. “Our staff and volunteers will encourage social distancing wherever we can.  Any food is served by YMCA staff and volunteers that are masked and gloved.  And of course, hand sanitizing stations around the various tables.”

One radiant constant in the Family Fun Day experience is the host of rich benefits and memory-making experiences it offers for Hernando families.

“This event is a way to target the Brooksville families and youth to showcase the value of family time together.  Our goal is to have families come out and provide feedback on programs and activities that they would like to see being offered to  engage their children and/or that the youth would like to get involved in,” said Slusser. “The YMCA is a community-minded organization that serves to strengthen communities through programs and activities as well as partnerships within the community.   We want everyone to be able to say that they have had the ability to experience the Y and see the impact that can truly be made when we come together to serve needs within the community.”
