A man is dead and a woman was injured after a shooting at the Opinions Lounge in Brooksville.
According to Mike Terry, deputy public information officer for the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, in the early hours of April 3, law enforcement personnel responded to a call about a shooting outside the Opinions Lounge. Upon arrival, deputies found that a 25-year-old Brooksville man had sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound, and that a 21-year-old woman had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The man was transported to the hospital where he later died.
Both had been patrons of the lounge, Terry said.
Their names were withheld under Marsy’s Law, he said.
Passed in 2018 as a Florida Constitutional amendment, Marsy’s Law protects the confidentiality of crime victims and their families, and requires courts to consider their safety when setting bail for the accused.
After being questioned, lounge employee Stanley Matiyosus was arrested and charged with Second-Degree Murder with a Firearm and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.
He was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where he’s being held in lieu of a no bond status.
Terry declined further comment on grounds that the investigation remains ongoing.
