Spring football games set for next month

Spring football is in the air and slated to start throughout the state of Florida by the end of the month and at this time last year, the coronavirus pandemic had canceled all spring football activities. Now with schools back in session full go, it’s likely high school sports will make it through an entire calendar year and that means spring ball is back for high school football. We have compiled the spring football games for every high school team in Hernando County. Below is the full slate of games for Hernando County teams from May 20th to May 28th.

May 20th

Springstead at Palm Harbor University: It was a tough 2020 campaign for the Eagles, as they went 1-5 on the season and the lone win was 40-0 over Inverness Citrus. Other than that, the Eagles struggled to find their footing. Springstead will face off against a Hurricanes team that reached the postseason last fall and finished with a record of 4-5. This should be a closely contested spring game.

Mount Dora at Central: No team faced a tougher 2020 season than the Central Bears, who ended up scoring one touchdown through six games played and yielded 240 points. They’ll face off against a Mount Dora Hurricanes team that went 1-7 last fall but did score a boatload of points (226). The Hurricanes lone win last season was a 47-44 thriller over Eustis.

Carrollwood Day at Hernando: This spring game may be without a doubt the most intriguing contest for any Hernando County squad as they face private school power Carrollwood Day. Hernando reached the playoffs last season and lost against Orlando Jones to end its playoff run. The Leopards are a very talented team, but will have to find the replacement for tailback for Contae Cason. Look for Jordan Williams to see plenty of touches for Hernando. The Patriots were an extremely talented team last season but finished at 5-5 and fell short of expectations.

May 21st

Nature Coast at Clearwater Countryside: Undefeated throughout the regular season, Nature Coast’s playoff run came to a screeching halt when they faced juggernaut Orlando Bishop Moore. But the Sharks have a vital piece of the offense back in the fold, as quarterback Ethan Fahey is in the controls. Fahey threw for 1,140 yards and 15 touchdowns versus one interception. The Sharks will take on a Cougars team that defeated Dade City Pasco in the playoffs before falling against Tampa Gaither.

May 27th

Jamboree*

Braden River/Jordan Christian at Weeki Wachee: A jamboree! What used to be something regularly done has become more of a rarity. The Hornets played well under head coach Chris Cook last year and now invite multiple programs into Hernando County. Braden River Pirates went 4-4 last season, but are one of the stronger programs in Manatee County. Watch out for junior running back Lavontae Youmans, who rushed for 1,073 yards last fall. The Jordan Christian Seahawks went 0-6 in 2020 and were out-scored 187-38.
