State Senate President Wilton Simpson (R-Trilby) has asked the Chair of the Senate rules committee to remove HB1635 from that body’s calendar of bills for consideration.
Filed in March by Rep. Blaise Ingoglia (R-Spring Hill), HB1835 is a proposed Local Bill that would make the position of Superintendent of Hernando County Schools an elected post as instead of an appointed one
The State’s House of Representatives passed the bill on April 23 by an 84-29 margin.
The measure moved onto the Senate the same day where it was sent to the Rules Committee for consideration. On April 26, that Committee placed HB1635 on the Local calendar for April 29.
In an April 29 letter to Senate Rules Committee Chairperson Kathleen Passidono, Simpson – who is a member of the three-person Hernando County legislative delegation – requested that the measure not be included on the calendar for bills headed to the Senate Floor for consideration.
Said Simpson’s letter, “As a member of the Hernando Delegation I hereby object to hearing House Bill 1635 and I respectfully request it not be placed on the calendar of bills to be considered on the Senate Floor this Thursday, April 29, 2021.”
According to Senate Spokesperson Katherine Betta, Simpson has not commented further, however, removal from the calendar means that the measure would not advance during the current Legislative Session which ends on April 30. according to Senate Spokesperson Katherine Betta.
Ingoglia was not available to provide comment as he was in session today.
