An inmate at the Hernando County Detention Center has died according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). The official cause of his death is yet to be determined.
HCSO Deputy Public Information Officer (PIO) Mike Terry said that about 11 pm on June 15, a group of inmates alerted a deputy on duty inside the Detention Center that another inmate was unresponsive.
Medical unit personnel along with that deputy, three others, a corporal and a sergeant, immediately responded to the unresponsive inmate’s cell where another inmate, deputies and the nursing staff performed CPR in unsuccessful attempts to revive him.
Personnel from the Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services subsequently transported Robert William Bailey, 50 to Bayfront Health in Brooksville where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m.
“Preliminary investigation revealed Bailey died as a result of a medical condition,” Terry said.
Bailey’s body was transported to the District 5 Medical Examiner’s Office in Leesburg for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
According to Terry, Bailey had been an inmate at the Hernando County Detention Center since December 2020 charged with Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification.
He was also being held on warrants from Pasco, Polk and Sumter counties, he said.
