Education is much like sunshine for the soul and right now in Hernando County, the public has the opportunity to help provide educational enrichment for those who need it the most.
The Florida Organization of Human Services Conference is seeking workshop proposals for its “Resilient Horizons: Breaking Down Barriers,” Flohs 2021 Virtual Conference, October 6-7, 2021.
The Florida Organization of Human Services Conference (FLOHS) is a state of Florida non-profit organization which aims to strengthen recognition of the unique and valued role of human services educators, students, and providers. Eddie Williams, Ed.D, LMHC, NCC, MSW, MCAP, HS-BCP, Program Director/Assistant Professor, Human Services of Pasco-Hernando State College, is FLOHS President and Conference Organizer. “A major mission of the organization is to increase professional development opportunities among those in the industry. We anticipate approximately 200 participants including students, educators, practitioners, and administrators from various universities, human services organizations, and government agencies throughout the state of Florida,” said Williams. “We are asking for representatives from your organization to participate in this monumental occasion.” Currently, Williams is seeking workshop proposals for its inaugural virtual conference October 6-7.
“The conference theme is ‘Resilient Horizons: Breaking Down Barriers.’ In keeping with the conference theme this year, we are issuing a call for proposals on how to be resilient through trying times,” read a conference information packet. “We are experiencing global pandemics, racial injustices, and various social problems that impact the field of human services. Conference proposals should focus on how to provide knowledge and skills to help others be resilient.” The conference audience will include students, new practitioners, and more established professionals. Submissions may focus on interventions, skills, knowledge, and wellness related to, “assisting Human Services professionals to master their craft and become more effective leaders. Submit your proposal and share your expertise with colleagues and those just entering the field of Human Services.”
Presentations will run typically either 60 or 90 minutes in length. Presenters may submit proposals that are longer and must be completed in multiple sessions. Overall, proposals must be focused on one of the following competency areas:
● Ethics in Helping Relationships
● Interviewing and Intervention Skills
● Group Work
● Case Management
● Human Development
● Social and Cultural Issues
● Social Problems
● Assessment/Treatment Planning
● Intervention Models/Theories
● Human Behavior
● Social Welfare and Public Policy
● Research, Program Evaluation and Supervision
Proposals must be submitted by 8/1/21, CV/Resume, and Include a 1–3-minute video (Introduce Self & Summary of your topic) OR Abstract of your topic (100-300 words)

All proposal applicants that are approved by the executive board will be notified no later than
8/15/21.

Those who would like to make a different contribution to the cause of education are invited to support The Pace Center for Girls in Hernando County. According to their website, Pace Center for Girls was founded in 2018 to serve middle and high school girls,”who are struggling but want to make positive changes in their lives. As a movement, Pace was founded in 1985 to provide an opportunity for young women and girls to create a better future through education, counseling, training, and advocacy.” Pace helps more than 3,000 girls every year throughout the state of Florida, including right here in Hernando County.
Pace coordinators are now looking forward to the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, and are seeking educational support for members. “Our summer session is in full swing, and we are looking forward to the fall session starting in August,” explained Diana Jerome, Pace Community Engagement Manager for Pasco & Hernando. To give girls in need a strong, promising start to the school year, they are in need of the tools to succeed. “We would love to share that we are in need of school supplies for the fall as well as backpacks,” said Jerome.
