It is that time again! Join us on land and sea for the 5th Annual Hernando County Coastal Cleanup. Each year Florida Sea Grant and UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County team up with local businesses, clubs, and Hernando County Government to host the International Coastal Cleanup in Hernando County.
To date, volunteers have removed almost 15,000 pieces of trash from Hernando’s coastal systems during this annual cleanup. The top five items collected were cigarette butts, food wrappers, beverage cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles. These items originate from both land-based and water-based activities, and heavy rains facilitate the debris pathways into our coastal areas. Throughout the year, we must work together to prevent the trash from polluting these systems and endangering Florida’s wildlife.
How can you get involved?
When: September 18, 2021
Time: 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (stay for as long as you can)
Check-in Station*: Linda Pedersen Park (6300 Shoal Line Blvd, Spring Hill, Florida)
Pre-registration: https://2021coastalcleanup.eventbrite.ca
Unable to attend the cleanup in person? Please consider sponsoring or donating supplies. We want to provide our volunteers with the items to make our coastal cleanup as safe and successful as possible.
*We ask that all volunteers check in at our Linda Pedersen Park station to fill out paperwork, obtain collection supplies, and be assigned a location. All trash must be returned to our Linda Pedersen location to ensure proper disposal. If necessary, prior arrangements can be made for groups participating out on the water.
