The regular season for prep boys and girls basketball in the state of Florida is about to get fired up and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 2021-2022 campaign. We will be doing a weekly Top 6 ranking of the five teams within Hernando County. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 6 Prep Boys/Girls Basketball Poll.
BOYS
No. 1 Springstead (0-0): Coming off a 19-5 season and the disappointment of losing in the district tournament to Land O’ Lakes, Springstead looks to put everything behind them and make another run towards making the playoffs.
No. 2 Nature Coast (0-0): Yes, the Sharks actually were a team that got out of district play and got to play in the postseason and the Eagles didn’t. But it was a much different district in terms of difficulty.
No. 3 Central (0-0): The Bears were right there with everyone. Had a win over Nature Coast and nearly defeated Springstead. I mean, Central could be higher in this poll as the season starts up.
No. 4 Hernando (0-0): Two out of the Leopards’ four wins from last season came over Weeki Wachee. Improvements and goals for Hernando may be to inch a little closer to the 10-win plateau.
No. 5 Hernando Christian Academy (0-0): It was a tough season for the Lions last year but coming off a 3-17 campaign, they have the ability to make a push to No. 4 over Hernando.
GIRLS
No. 1 Hernando Christian Academy (0-0): Though Hernando Christian lost a lot from their state semifinal team from a year ago, their team returns some experience and coming from such a deep run, they start off No. 1.
No. 2 Hernando (0-0): The Leopards went a respectable 13-9 and lost in the first round of the playoffs last year to The Villages. Hernando brings back several players from last season, so they should be solid once again.
No. 3 Nature Coast (0-0): When you have a player like Heaven Lee back on your roster, the Sharks will absolutely have a chance to compete with anyone in the county on any given night.
No. 4 Springstead (0-0): The Eagles were a bit of an up and down team from a year ago. They started off the season slow before stringing together wins and coming back down to earth towards the end of the 2020-2021 campaign.
No. 5 Weeki Wachee (0-0): Does Billy Hughes have the right group in order to restore the winning culture? He seems to believe so and with a talented group, the Hornets could see themselves higher on this list as the season starts.
