The regular prep season for boys and girls basketball in the state of Florida is in the Winter tournament phase; And we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 2021-2022 campaign. We will be doing a bi-weekly Top 5 ranking of the five teams within Hernando County. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 5 Prep Boys/Girls Basketball Poll.Â
BOYSÂ
No. 1 Springstead (11-2): The Eagles have no doubt been Hernando County’s top team and their only losses have come to always good Wildwood and Clearwater. Upcoming matchups against Berkeley Prep, Lecanto and Plant City coming up, should be tall telling for Springstead.Â
No. 2 Central (9-3): The Bears could easily be undefeated at this point of the season. All three of the team’s losses have been by a margin of two or less points. Two losses have come against Springstead and the other to Ocala Forest.Â
No. 3 Nature Coast (3-5): This is not your usual Nature Coast Sharks’ basketball team. The Sharks are sitting below the .500 mark eight games in and just have not looked like their usual selves. The team has lost to Anclote, Springstead, Crystal River, Lecanto and Central.Â
No. 4 Weeki Wachee (5-4): The Hornets nearly pulled off what would still be an upset win, when they lost to Nature Coast 55-54. Yes, the Sharks are down but the Hornets are gradually getting better and those are steps in the right direction.Â
No. 5 Hernando (1-8): After a 64-55 win over Dade City Pasco in the second game of the season, a 7-game losing streak has followed afterwards. The Leopards have been reeling and need a win in the worst way as they enter the new year.Â
GIRLS
No. 1 Hernando (9-1): This particular Hernando team has been good in many different facets and the Leopards are on their way to a very special season. Hernando has only lost one game all season and that has been to Lecanto, though the Leopards easily defeated them earlier in the season.Â
No. 2 Weeki Wachee (10-5): It didn’t take long to realize the Hornets would be back amongst one of the top clubs in Hernando County. After a down year in 2020-2021, the Hornets have bounced back. Losses have come against Land O’ Lakes, River Ridge, Hernando, Lecanto and Calvary Christian.Â
No. 3 Springstead (6-8): Up and down. That’s been the Eagles’ season far, but they’ve been good for the most part. They did get blown out by Hernando, but a narrow loss to Weeki Wachee and win over Nature Coast has the Eagles trending upwards at this time.Â
No. 4 Nature Coast (5-4): The Sharks have been a solid team this season and have narrowly lost to some of the top teams. A 57-50 loss to No. 1 Hernando and a 42-32 loss to Weeki Wachee has the team on the right path as one of the top teams in Hernando County.Â
No. 5 Hernando Christian Academy (3-5): This is not your last year’s Lions team by a long shot. Hernando Christian Academy lost a lot of firepower from last season’s playoff team and it shows this season.Â
