Commissioners at the regular meeting on March 22, 2022, voted unanimously to name a new recreational building at Anderson Snow Park after the late Parks and Recreation Director, Harry A. Johnson.
The Harry A. Johnson Recreation Complex will be located roughly in the center of the park, adjacent to the splash pad. His name will appear directly on the building.
The naming committee consisted of Chairperson Tobey Phillips, Deputy County Administrator,
Chris Linsbeck, Community Services Director, Michelle Miller, Senior Planner, Amber Slusser, Branch Executive Director, YMCA, Nicole Bell, Recreation Specialist, Lenora Smith, Customer Service Technician II.
Lenora Smith is Johnson’s sister. His wife, Penny also attended the meeting.
Smith said when the decision was made, she was in the meeting via telephone while driving with her brother and other family members in the vehicle. “So, everybody in my car, which was my entire family, said they truly liked the [name].”
“If you’ve had anything to do with sports in Hernando County, you knew Harry Johnson,” Commissioner Jeff Holcomb commented.
