WEEKI WACHEE- Coaching changes have been more frequent over recent years and this past off-season has played out no differently.

The second high school football head coach hiring of the off-season in Hernando County has taken place over at Weeki Wachee High School. The program is coming off a winless campaign. The new hire, brings hope that the team can find some direction heading into spring football.

Weeki Wachee has named former Hernando defensive coordinator/Parrot Middle School head coach Jon Malandrucco as the Hornets’ next head football coach, according to a release announced via the school’s official athletics Twitter account last week. The move comes just in time, as spring football non-contact starts on April 25th and hitting on the 30th.

Malandrucco replaces former head coach Chris Cook, who stepped down as the lead man after three seasons at the helm. This past tumultuous season for Weeki Wachee was the most difficult campaign of the three years for Cook, a former offensive coordinator at Moore Haven High School. Weeki Wachee went 0-10 and the Hornets only scored 16 points total and allowed a total of 399 points.

The Hornets have reached the playoffs just once in 2020 when mostly every school that participated in the state series qualified. Outside of the one appearance, Weeki Wachee has never reached the state playoffs or has finished with a winning record above the .500 mark.

Malandrucco becomes the fourth head coach in program history, with Cook, Jacob Gray and Mark Lee being the others. Weeki Wachee athletic director Michael McHugh made the announcement of selecting Malandrucco via Twitter and down below was the release the made on his appointment as the school’s next lead man.

‘Proud to announce our new Head Football coach Jon Malandrucco. He comes to us from DS Parrot middle school where he was the Athletic Director, Head Football coach, and also coached Track. Prior to that he was the Defensive Coordinator and Track HC at Hernando and Weeki Wachee.’ – Weeki Wachee Athletics Twitter
