The Splash Mountain attraction at Disney World will officially close on Jan. 23, 2023, to make room for a new attraction based on the firm’s animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”
Initially opened in July 1989, Splash Mountain features characters and music from Disney’s 1946 live-action and animated film “The Song of the South.” That film and the Splash Mountain attraction became controversial for allegedly having “racist overtones.”
Disney announced that it was closing Splash Mountain in a Dec. 2 posting on its Disney World Blog and in a Twitter Posting.
When it opens sometime in 2024, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will feature “Princess and the Frog” character Princess Tiana and jazz-loving alligator Louis during Mardi Gras season as they prepare to host a one-of-a-kind celebration for the people of New Orleans.
