John Hitt, who served as president of the University of Central Florida for 26 years before retiring in 2018, died Monday at age 82, the university said on its website. Hitt oversaw massive growth after taking over as president in 1992, with the university enrollment growing to 66,000 students at the time of his retirement. He also oversaw additions such as the UCF College of Medicine. The announcement on the university website said Hitt is survived by his wife, Martha, children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
