Employers who pay for their employees to travel out of state for gender dysphoria treatment, including surgery, would be required to pay for them to reverse that treatment regardless of whether the employee is working for the company at the time or not.
State Sen. Blaise Ingoglia (R-Spring Hill) filed SB 952, the Employer Coverage of Gender Dysphoria Treatment “Reverse Woke Act” on Feb. 20. The bill would require employers who either directly, indirectly, or through benefits, cover employees’ gender dysphoria treatment to also cover the total cost of future treatments that reverse the initial treatment regardless of its cost.
According to the proposed bill, those treatments would include “surgery, hormone replacement therapy, or any other procedure or treatment that assists those with gender dysphoria to transition to their self-identified gender.”
Under the proposed measure, employers or former employers who refuse to cover the reverse transition treatment would be subject to civil litigation.
“Woke businesses need to be held accountable when offering to pay for gender-affirming surgeries in other states, such as California because they are nothing more than political decisions masquerading as healthcare and human resource decisions,” Ingoglia said. “If these companies truly cared about their employees, this should be a no-brainer for them.”
According to Ingoglia, at least 27 companies, including Amazon and Disney, have pledged to pay for Floridians to travel to and pay for gender-affirming surgery in other states.
SB 952 will be considered by the Florida legislature when its regular session begins on March 7.
