The Hernando County Hawk’s first game of their inaugural season was Saturday, February 25, 2023, against Orlando Americans at Northeast Regional Park 50901 US 27 Davenport. Orlando Americans came away with the win 34 – 20. The first home game for the Hawks will be Saturday, March 4, 2023, against the Bay Area Reapers at Hernando High School, kicking off at 7 pm.
Here are comments from a couple of the captains regarding their first game of the season as a new team.
Markus Hedgepeth stated, “Even though we didn’t get the results we wanted, I’m proud of the team for not giving up, I feel towards the end of 3rd QR we started to find out a rhythm on offense and think we can use that momentum heading into this week matchup against the champs. On defense, we gotta get to the QB and tackle better like the coach has been teaching us. (I’m excited) to see how we bounce back.”
Jordan Anthony Wright remarked, “We played till the end and that shows heart. We had some bad calls but couldn’t leave the game in the ref’s hands. As the quarterback and a leader, I have to play better. I believe in this team and my brothers, we just have to get things clicking on all cylinders and that starts on the practice field. So we will go back to the lab this week and put this last game behind us and work to go 1-0 this week. And as always all the glory to God.”
Austin Webster said, “I think there were a lot of bright spots in our game. We played a very talented Americans team but they came out in the end with the win. I feel like we have shown a lot of improvement from our preseason game and as we continue to work to be better we shift our focus to the Bay Area Reapers.”
