HCFR units responded to a brush fire on Seely Lane on March 21. The fire was contained around 3 pm. No rain, low humidity, and wind contributed to a higher fire threat. HCSO assisted with aerial surveillance.

On March 20, Engine 4, Air Truck 5, Fire Corps, and Fire Prevention visited Challenger K-8 for First Responder Day.

Fire Truck 14 is currently in production. HCFR anticipates the truck to be completed within the next 12 weeks. South Florida Emergency Vehicles is building the new Sutphen SPH100 aerial platform (HS7348) – Tower 14 for HCFR.

While students were away for Spring Break, HCSO and HCFR Emergency Management Division conducted a school shooting exercise at Explorer K-8. HCFR states, “Coordination and teamwork is key in the successful response to this type of incident. We hope this never happens in our community, nonetheless, it’s still a situation we must prepare for.”

HCFR responded to a fire at Gifford Dr and Elgin Blvd on March 18. The fire involved two vehicles next to a home and damaged two structures. No injuries were reported, but the cause is under investigation.

HCFR reminds area businesses that there is still time to sign up as a vendor for the 2023 Hernando County Hurricane Expo. The application period closes on April 5th, 2023. Visit www.hernandocounty.us/expo for more information. The Expo is on June 9 at Challenger K-8 from 9 am to 2 pm.

On March 16, crews from firehouses 2 and 4 conducted drills performing single and double firefighter high window entry. This tactic is useful on mobile homes with windows higher than a standard house. They also worked on window bailouts and entanglement scenarios. Station 8 crews responded to a UTV crash at Croom Motocross, where one patient was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
