Another teacher in national headlines and school board member calls for superintendent no-confidence vote
It is no secret that recent School Board meetings have become a forum for personal attacks, clashing ideologies, and political agendas. Rules of order are sometimes loosely if at all, enforced, resulting in a constant back-and-forth of accusations, personal attacks, and rebuttals.
The fallout from a March 24th incident at Fox Chapel Middle School remains at the center of the current firestorm and has now metastasized into a variety of new issues, including an all-out culture war. LGBTQ rights, the treatment of teachers by the administration and School Board members, the indoctrination of students, and the rights of parents were all at the center of the most recent School Board meeting on May 9th.
In the Fox Chapel incident, a transgender teacher experiencing a mental crisis during school hours made statements that were perceived by some as threats against students. The teacher was removed and returned to the classroom in a matter of days, all without notification to parents. The incident made international news after it was revealed by parents at an April School Board meeting.
The district’s handling of the incident, or lack of it according to some, has polarized parents, teachers, Board members, unions, LGBTQ activists, and parental rights groups into different camps, all advocating for their viewpoints. A group of parents in attendance were concerned that their children were being “indoctrinated,” while statements by some teachers did more to confirm parents’ fears than alleviate them. The standing-room-only crowd packing the Board meeting room remained stone-faced while the Board conducted routine business. The citizen’s input portion of the meeting is where the fireworks began. Thirty-two speakers lined up to address the Board.
The meeting culminated with school board member Mark Johnson motioning for a vote of no confidence for Superintendent Stratton.
