At the May 9th Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, Commissioner Brian Hawkins introduced a resolution that designates Hernando County as a “Blue County,” showing unwavering support for law enforcement. “National Police Week was created in 1962 after then-President of the United States John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726. The law designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and stated that the week in which the day falls shall be National Police Week.”
The board approved the resolution designating Hernando County as a “Blue County” in support of all law enforcement. Section 2 of the resolution encourages residents to add blue to their homes in the form of ribbons or blue lights to Back the Blue.
Hawkins added that former commissioner, currently State Representative Jeff Holcomb, has said, “Hernando County backed the blue before it was cool.”
All commissioners took time to commend the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Al Nienhuis and several of his deputies and staff were in attendance as the resolution was read.
Thank you to each and every one of our law enforcement officers for focusing on the safety of our residents and visitors to our beautiful county.
