On May 17, 2023, around 11:30 p.m., Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Our Road in Brooksville due to a verbal argument, which later escalated to a shooting. It’s pertinent to note that deputies had responded to the same residence earlier that evening in regard to a domestic disturbance, but the persons involved were no longer there.
While deputies were on their way to the scene, 9-1-1 operators received a call saying that a person had been shot at the Our Road location. Deputies hastened their response, and emergency medical services were also dispatched. Upon arrival, the deputies discovered that the property had multiple structures housing different people. Some were family members, and others were not.
Two adult males residing in separate residences got into a verbal argument over unknown reasons, which turned into a physical fight. Then one of the males went into his residence to retrieve a firearm and shot the other male involved in the fight. The victim was found in the yard with at least one gunshot wound and was in critical condition. Their identity was withheld due to Marsy’s Law, which protects victims.
The suspect, 60-year-old Troy Allen Montgomery, was treated for injuries possibly sustained during the fight and was subsequently arrested. Montgomery refused to be interviewed by detectives. He was charged with attempted murder, but the investigation is still ongoing, and there may be additional or upgraded charges in the future.
