Mark your calendar for the county’s annual Hurricane & Safety Expo on June 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Challenger K-8 School located at 13400 Elgin Blvd., Spring Hill, where residents and businesses can get crucial storm-related information at one convenient location. The expo is the county’s premier storm preparation event that connects residents with businesses and emergency services providers. Its mission is to prepare residents for extreme weather situations through presentations, interactive exhibits, weather forecasting, and more.
This free event is family-friendly and open to the public.
Pick up the county’s latest updated disaster guide and visit with exhibitors who will help you prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. Vendors and exhibitors, including the Hernando County Fire & Emergency Services, Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife, Hernando County CERT, and the Hernando County Fire Corp., will be on hand to give demonstrations and pass out literature to attendees. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with exhibitors and receive pertinent information on hurricane preparedness. Businesses represented will include experts on storm equipment, gutter protection and disaster remediation services, and many more.
“This year, we are hoping the Expo will be bigger and better,” said David DeCarlo, the county’s Director of Emergency Management. “We will be featuring public safety displays, vendor tables, freebies, and a Hurri-Kids Zone.”
At 10 a.m., the expo will present a SKYWARN® class. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with thousands of trained severe weather spotters who help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service (NWS). Anyone with an interest in public safety is encouraged to participate, but you must pre-register by calling 352-754-4083.
Also on hand to answer questions at noon will be a panel of TV meteorologists from local television stations, followed by a panel discussion on this year’s forecast. There will also be a raffle to win a home generator and a football signed by Tampa Bay Buccaneer Vita Vea.
